Police Grandpa

On April 5, 2013 we lost our Grandpa.  We called him Police Grandpa and he will be missed.  He was a Lenexa, KS police officer for almost 30 years.  He was a strong man and had large hands. He could rip the Dallas phone book in half!  When he came to visit, we always took a trip to Dairy Queen and he would always go swimming with us.  He had a frog living in his arm and it could jump from arm to arm (he would make his bicep move up and down to make it look like a frog jumping).

We headed up to Kansas to say our goodbyes.  We enjoyed our visit with family that we don't get to see as often as we would like.  It makes things a little easier when you can laugh with family and remember the stories and moments you had.

The service was a very neat service and a great tribute to a Police Officer that was so loved.  The grandkids had the honor of being the ball bearers.  There was a section at the church reserved for the Police Officers and when we were taking him to the herse, they formed two lines and saluted as we walked him by.  We were then escorted to Leavenworth National Cemetery by a full Police escort.  There were 3 motorcycles and several Police vehicles.  They would not let anyone pass by us.  When we arrived at the cemetery, there was an Officer up on the hill above us and the Police Officers stood in lines again and saluted as we walked the casket to the covered area.  Taps was played, there was a flag ceremony and a 21 Gun Salute.  My cousin, Jason, who is now a Lenexa Police Officer presented the flag to my Grandma Lois.  The service was a great tribute and it was so wonderful to see how many people knew and loved our Grandpa.  He will be missed!

Borrowed from Jason (hope he doesn't mind) :)
